Cleopatra and Julius Caesar, two of the most daring characters who ever lived, have been at the center of many dramatic works for theater, film and opera. Shakespeare famously treated both the downfall of Julius Caesar and the subsequent romance between Cleopatra and Mark Anthony in two separate plays. Handel's sensuous score brings together Caesar and Cleopatra, skilled politicians and lovers, against a backdrop of military conflict. Sung in Italian with english titles.

In New York, a group of talented carvers were among the throngs of Jewish immigrants from Eastern and Central Europe who arrived in America between the 1880s and 1920s. Undocumented in surviving congregational records or by the artists themselves, the surprising association between immigrant Jewish woodcarvers and the American carousel industry is revealed through the pivotal figure of Marcus Charles Illions.

Glimmerglass Opera is pleased to present the first fully-staged production in North America of Richard Wagner's opera Das Liebesverbot (Forbidden Love) as part of its 2008 Festival Season. Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear an early work by one of opera's great masters. Based on Measure for Measure, Das Liebesverbot is a comedy with Shakespearean depth, lively music, and moments that hint at an emerging signature style. Sung in German with English titles.

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous versions of this timeless tale of two star-crossed lovers. Bellini's opera, a masterpiece of bel canto lyricism, draws on Italian source material to tell the heartbreaking story of the two feuding families and the tragedy they suffer. Glimmerglass favorites Sandra Piques Eddy and Sarah Coburn return as two of the most poignant characters ever to grace the stage. Sung in Italian with English titles.
