In New York, a group of talented carvers were among the throngs of Jewish immigrants from Eastern and Central Europe who arrived in America between the 1880s and 1920s. Undocumented in surviving congregational records or by the artists themselves, the surprising association between immigrant Jewish woodcarvers and the American carousel industry is revealed through the pivotal figure of Marcus Charles Illions.

Undocumented in surviving congregational records or by the artists themselves, the surprising association between immigrant Jewish woodcarvers and the American carousel industry is revealed through the pivotal figure of Marcus Charles Illions.
